Monday’s Travel Photos – Monet’s Garden in Giverny

Print pagePDF pageEmail page

For years, I didn’t go to Monet’s garden in Giverny because I was told there were too many people. Now we go at least twice a year! The best time to visit is at lunch time, when there aren’t any groups and few people queuing. And to avoid the queues altogether, you can either go to the Impressionism Museum (an offshoot of the Orsay Museum) first and buy a double ticket, or buy your ticket on-line. Both the garden and museum are open from the beginning of April to the end of October. These photos were taken in July when the famous nympheas are in bloom, but every month is beautiful. The tulips in April are stunning and the roses in June are out of this world. Then you can eat outside under the trees at the historical Restaurant Baudy down the road (don’t forget to check the inside).

  1. What stunning photos Aussie in France.
A Monet exhibition is opening in Melbourne
Australia in May at the NGV. We are all pretty excited here
ar the prospect. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Well, thank you. I love Monet’s garden and Monet’s paintings. How wonderful to have an exhibition in Melbourne! Have you been to the Marmottan Museum in Paris? Many people don’t realise how many of Monet’s paintings are there.

      1. I absolutely adore Musée Marmottan. I have been overwhelmed with emotion seeing all the Monet’s there. I have to admit though that many of them were not there when I went in January this year. There was an exhibition of stunning Flemish paintings that were hanging where many of the Monet’s usually are downstairs. The relatively small number of Monet’s were rather crowdedly displayed on the ground floor. Perhaps some of them were already on their way to Melbourne. Like Suzanne I am looking forward to the exhibition at the NGV having recently viewed the Neo Impressionist exhibition there.

        1. What a pity the paintings were not there! I really love the ones of Rouen, as you must too, I assume.

  2. I love Giverny too. Once you’ve seen the water garden you know exactly why the waterlily paintings are as they are. The American Garden just up the road is worth visiting too.

    1. We have some beautiful memories of that place, and the crowds. Next time we’ll take your advice about lunchtimes.
