  2. Very useful advice, Aussie.
In our purchases and sales in France we’ve dealt with a couple of Notaires, one in Evian-les-Bains and another in Preuilly-sur-Claise. Both have been very helpful although the one in Evian was very slow at chasing up the buyers of our apartment, letting dates slip. This meant we didn’t know up until the last minute whether our purchase in Le Petit-Pressigny would go through. I believe in the end our Notaire in P-s-C needed to be very firm and demand that the money was transferred immediately.
I take your point about having a Notaire acting only on your behalf. Is this common in France?

  4. After living 27 years Dow Nunder, 10 in the States and 45 here in France, I’ve had my share of “notaires”. All but one were competent, honest and pleasant. I did not have the benefit of your excellent advice, much more useful than knowing that Napoléon wisely imposed them for real estate and other transactions, with the advantage of disinterested advice and permanent record, and their curious unique distinction as the only profession which feels obliged to put up a sign in their waiting room justifying their fees !
