Hi Rosemary, all excellent suggestions and I agree with Pat in Toulouse don’t forget the toilet rolls. Thanks for the mention on Twitter of our website http://www.homeexchange50plus.com

Hi Brian, you’re very welcome. I consider that toilet paper, paper towels, soap, etc. are all part of the exchange.
I have done 51 exchanges and have 3 more planned in Europe for July-August. I really can relate to the adequate instructions part–and directions to the washer/dryer. I have a 30 page book on my house with comprehensive instructions to everything. In Sydney, Australia, recently, I was given 3 pages of instructions–and the washer door had to be fiddled with with an exact touch before it would work. It was very frustrating and the exchangers left a dirty house and were very unhelpful–even blase–when I sent them emails asking for instructions. They had done a couple of exchangers and should have been more considerate. You never know from house photos, do you?

Hi, thank you for your comment. Fifty-one and 3 coming up is pretty good but I guess I will get there soon is I keep up my current rate. And I agree, house photos are not necessarily indicative. At least the homes we’ve been in have been clean.
Leave at least one new roll of toilet paper and a bin liner. 🙂
Oh goodnesss, I hadn’t experienced a lack of toilet paper and bin liners yet!

Great advice, thank you. yn
I loved your piece. My main problems with exchanges have involved people who just aren’t clean:

But overall I have been pretty satisfied:
